What is Mankading in Cricket?

According to Law 41.16 of the Cricket Rules, "Non-striker leaving his/her ground early: If the non-striker is out of his/her ground between the time the ball enters play and the time the bowler would typically have been expected to drop the ball, the bowler is entitled to attempt to run him/her out. The ball shall not be counted as one in the over whether the attempt is successful or not.
Although this dismissal is lawful, it is viewed as being against the spirit of the game.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that "Mankading" will be moved from the "unfair play" area to the "run out" section with effect from October 1, 2022, as a result of the never-ending argument surrounding the do's and don'ts of the "Spirit of the Game".

Why are we discussing Mankading today?

On September 24th, Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma ran out England’s Charlie Dean standing outside the crease at the non-striker’s end at Lord’s, giving India a 3-0 ODI series sweep but triggering outrage that has traditionally accompanied incidents of “Mankading” in the sport. Dean’s dismissal ended a remarkable fightback by England who had recovered from 118 for 9 to within 16 runs of India’s total of 169.

Our guest - Malo Roy is a cricket enthusiast and as a kid, growing up in the 90’s, he has seen how Indian Cricket has prospered over these years. He resides in Melbourne with his beautiful family and with his daughter growing up, he has taken keen interest on women’s cricket, in which, to his obvious delight, Indian girls are a front runner as well. Malo is also intrigued on how cricket is not managed by rules, but laws.
