Shadow people are those who live among you but are not really part of your inner circle of friends and acquaintances. They can include waiters, the person you occasionally chat with when you are walking your dog, other parents you wave at when you take your kids to soccer practice, and so forth. Dr. Les Carter explains that you can tell much about a person's character by observing how they treat those who live in the shadows. Are you apathetic? Rude? Encouraging? Respectful? While you may never develop significant attachments to these people, your character is on display each time you encounter them.
