Discussion with filmmaker Michelle Aguilar director of "No Place to Grow" and "El Cacao" as part of the Spring 2022 NAS Food Sovereignty Lab and Traditional Ecological Knowledges Institute Film Series (held on Thursday April 21, 2022).

"No Place to Grow" follows a group of Latinx farmers who find themselves representing a movement to save the last green space centered within a neighborhood facing gentrification in Santa Cruz, CA. Over time we find out what happens when migrated farming traditions intersect with the "urban growth machine."

"El Cacao" exposes the dark side of chocolate production in Latin America by examining the economics of Fair Trade from the point of view of the Indigenous farmers as they attempt to sustain their community through the growth, harvest, and trade of cacao beans in the global market.
