Nestled in a picturesque valley between Abkhazia and South Ossetia lie the 40 mountain villages of Svaneti, homeland of the Svans. Towering mountains reaching heights of 5000 meters surround this remote region of Georgia. Accessing the Georgian mountains is challenging, and time appears to stand still here.
The Svans distinguish themselves from other Georgians with their strong adherence to tradition. They fiercely preserve their medieval culture, maintaining their own language and a unique cult of icons. Despite modern advancements, the Svans continue to farm their meager land without the use of machinery, and ancient rituals remain a vital part of their daily lives.
A new era has dawned for the Svans, marked by change and adaptation. Yet, they are determined not to forsake their cherished values and age-old traditions.
