Welcome to Day 4 of 14 Days of DBT Skills! Today I am talking about the Opposite Action skill. This skill is really useful if you are having strong emotions that are being activated by your interpretation of a situation, rather than the actual situation at present in front of you. Sometimes emotions are activated by how we are interpreting a situation, rather than what is actually going on. These interpretations might be happening as a result of difficult things that happened in the past, distressing memories that have been activated, flashbacks or other things that are going on deep in our unconscious mind or memories.
Opposite action is a skill that can be hugely beneficial for managing emotions that have been activated by interpretations of a situation, rather than a situation itself. I really hope this video explains this skill to you so you can give it a try for yourself if you think it may be helpful.
