Welcome to Day 3 of 14 Days of DBT Skills! Today I am talking about the Identifying Emotions skill. Before I started DBT I thought I understood emotions well, but this therapy gave me a whole new outlook and toolkit.

Emotions are always valid, but sometimes they don't fit the facts of the situation at hand. Often emotions arise from interpretations or memories from the past that have been activated, rather than what is actually happening. Identifying emotions accurately helps me to understand whether an emotion fits the facts of the situation and whether I need to act opposite to the emotion (a skill that I will discuss tomorrow).

Although it's long, I hope this video can help you identify emotions and be a first step to understanding whether they fit the facts or whether they are being activated by a past experience, memory or interpretation.

Daily DBT Video Schedule:
Day 1 - observe and describe
Day 2 - non-judgmental stance
Day 3 - identifying emotions
Day 4 - opposite action to emotion
Day 5 - self-validation

Day 8 - cope ahead (worst case scenario)
Day 9 - improve the moment
