Succession to the throne in Praja Mangkunegaran has occurred repeatedly since the founding of Mangkunegaran in 1757. However, this succession has never proceeded according to the prevailing standards, in accordance with the Paugeran outlined by Sultan Agung. According to Mataram Dynasty custom, those who have the right to be appointed as king are the first male sons born to the empress. And history has witnessed that the first male son born to the empress was never crowned as Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya Mangkunegoro. Raden Mas Said, who later became Mangkunegoro I, founder of Praja Mangkunegaran, was replaced after his death by his grandson. Likewise, Mangkunegoro II was succeeded by his grandson as Mangkunegoro III. Mangkunegoro III's successor was not a descendant of the King's direct line. Mangkunegoro IV was Mangkunegoro III's cousin, who later became his son-in-law. After the death of Mangkunegoro IV, who was appointed as his successor was the second son of his empress. After Mangkunegoro V died, at a relatively young age, his younger brother was appointed as Mangkunegoro VI.
Appointments that do not follow these standards will in some cases cause problems. As is known, the appointment of a prince as Crown Prince aims to prepare the prince to serve as head of the Mangkunegaran Praja government. In other words, the institution of the crown prince is nothing more and nothing less than providing knowledge for him who will later be appointed King when the time comes. The appointment of a king who is not a crown prince means crowning a king who has not been trained as a king. And this happened to Raden Mas Suyitno or Prince Dayaningrat who was later crowned Kanjeng Gusti Prince Adipati Arya Mangkunegoro VI.
