In this video—which comes from Berklee Online’s Microphone Techniques for Live Sound Production course by Ken “Pooch” Van Druten and Ben Cochran—instructor Ben Cochran walks you through a microphone’s polar pattern. To test the pattern, a microphone must be placed in front of a speaker (playing a constant frequency), and spun 360 degrees. While this process is happening, the microphone’s sensitivity will be reflected in an output graph that will show you its polar pattern.

Ken “Pooch” Van Druten is a tenured and acclaimed producer, engineer, and live sound engineer. Ben Cochran is an engineer and technology adviser at Audio-Technica in Stow, Ohio, and is the worship and production director at Christ Community Chapel in Hudson, Ohio. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering.
