Open source maintainers are overworked and underpaid, while trying to recruit mostly voluntary contributors. The OSS world is dramatically less diverse than the tech industry. Like this abstract, this talk kicks off a bit downer with the problem statements, but ends really actionably. DEI in open source is a sociotechnical problem that begs for sociotechnical solutions. This talk will reflect on lessons learned from dozens of interviews Jennifer has had with open source leadership and contributors, looking to build a guide to increase diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the OSS world – which by result also increases overall community participation. This talk will be a mix of stories from open source community members and actionable ways – some manual, some technical – to build a truly inclusive community of repeat contributors and the next generation of OSS leadership.
