Most cats admitted to pounds or shelters are classed as stray. Some are trapped because they are causing a nuisance, and others are brought to shelters by people who believe the cat will be “better off in the shelter”. Most free-roaming cats in urban areas are intentionally fed by humans. Semi-owners who regularly feed a cat they do not own demonstrate strong bonds with the cats, even those feeding multiple cats. Semi-owners feeding 1 to 2 cats represent a huge pool of adopters for these cats, that are often timid and would otherwise be at high risk of euthanasia. By providing free sterilization, microchipping and registration for these cats, most semi-owners can be converted to owners. AMOs should consider harnessing this bond to manage the cats utilizing a One Welfare approach, including for problematic multi-cat situations, in light of the potential for inducing psychological trauma if trap-adopt/kill methods are implemented.
