What is the PNF system & stretching technique?
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) also known as resistance stretching, was first developed by Margaret Knott PT, and Herman Kabat MD in the 1940s to treat neurological dysfunctions. It is an effective way of using reflexes to assist muscular relaxation.
Stretching using these principles is only one part of a system used by physical therapists to help muscular strengthening, stability, neuromuscular control, as well as mobility and coordination.
PNF stretching is a particular technique that enhances muscle elasticity and has been shown to have a positive effect on both the active and passive range of movements.
