Thermoelectric coolers reduce the temperature of an object below the ambient temperature, while keeping the object temperature in balance, regardless of the surrounding temperature. It is an active cooling system of Peltier heat transfer elements and can be used for applications ranging from milliwatts to kilowatts.
Most thermoelectric cooler modules can pump 3-6 watts/cm2 per surface area. These coolers are also available in the market as peltier, and their price varies depending on the amount of power they draw. Today, thermoelectric coolers between 45 watts and 545 watts are available at affordable prices.
Thermoelectric coolers are also sometimes called thermoelectric modules or Peltier coolers. Thermoelectric coolers are semiconductors that work like a small heat pump, usually in the form of semiconductor electrodes located between two ceramic plates. Thanks to a small voltage from a direct current source, heat moves from one end of the module to the other. Thus, while one side of the module heats up, the other side starts to cool simultaneously. This phenomenon can be reversed by swapping the positive and negative poles of the DC source. A thermoelectric module can be used as a heater or a cooler, depending on its intended use.
When the cold part of the module reaches -40C, the heat pumping is interrupted and the heat pump loses its efficiency (efficiency drops to zero). That's why it's most efficient between -5 and -15C. At this point, the temperature changes its highest value to DeltaT.
If you start adding heat little by little to the cold part, the temperature of this part will rise until it is equal to the temperature of the heat tap. At this point, thermoelectric coolers reach their highest heat pumping capacity.
