There are many terms in the trade of pottery that associate pots with living things. We talk of the foot, the belly, the shoulder, the neck, and even the lip. Good pots are described in terms of virtues, such as honesty, strength, charm, warmth, and nobility. The pot has its own will; its desire is to escape from the potter’s hand by centrifugal force… wanting to go anywhere but from the center. If not for the strong hands of the potter who disciplines his clay, the clay would be thrown off.
