We would not rightfully be examining California without entering a region known as Gold Country. Back inland you drive and suddenly you find yourself engulfed by regions that culturally resonate more with Wild West legend than a particular west coast atmosphere. Surrounded by the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the little town of Coloma sits ostensibly insignificant as one would expect in similar hinterlands. Yet an unintentional mineral discovery catalyzed a frantic migration, the likes of which the United States had never yet seen in its existence. Fueled by the nation's new hysterical obsession with the gold said to be of abundance around here, this town experienced a sudden boom in population, and attracted heavy attention throughout the world. Ultimately, this became an early one of many events which helped the American West become known as a land for intrepid opportunity and resource extraction. How will our visit to Coloma "pan out" when we "dig up" our interest for The Golden State's true golden essence?
