He finished school, did college prep, and then in ‘43
At Annapolis, entered the Naval Academy
When he was done in ‘46, Jimmy earned his means
By serving first on warships, then the Navy’s submarines

The same year Jimmy graduated, he and Rosalynn wed
Four kids followed, John, James, Donnel and Amy that they’d head
He remained in the service until 1953
Then, he built a peanut farming business quite successfully
He ran for state Senator, in ‘62, he won
In ’71, Georgia‘s governor, he would become

Jimmy Carter, 39, a man of the earth
‘77 to ‘81 as President, proved his worth

In ‘76, Jimmy and Ford raced for the presidency
He won, then, gave draft-dodgers unconditional amnesty
With the Soviets, Jimmy reduced arms, helped Chrysler stay alive
But, the economy faltered, its health, he could not revive
In ’79, two crises came - energy and Iran
Gas lines, hostages held, inflation had the upper hand

Carter lost to Reagan, then embraced diplomacy
Won the Nobel Prize, worked with Habitat for Humanity
But, Jimmy, in his late 90s had entered hospice care
And, one day, dear Jimmy will take his first step on heaven’s stair
His legacy, many say, a man, honest and sincere
But, circumstances and decisions marred his White House years
