The Iapygians, divided into Daunians, Peuketians and Messapians, were the populations that once inhabited today's region of Apulia (Puglia).
Born from the migration of Illyrian peoples who had crossed the Adriatic Sea between the 11th and 10th centuries BC, in their ethnogenesis the Iapygians had also benefited from Mycenaean, Oscan and Ausonian influences.

More than all the other peoples of ancient Italy, the Iapygians would benefit from the influence of the Magna Graecia, with which they would develop a sort of love-and-hate relationship, as evidenced by the fluctuating relations with the important colony of Taras.
