In 2013, to recognize the 50th anniversary of The Beach Boys, fans were treated to what was marketed as the end-all/be-all of Beach Boys boxsets: "Made in California."

This 6-disc set, packed in an exclusive "yearbook," was designed to chronicle the group's entire career from 1961- 2012. Does it deliver on that promise? Somewhat...

With a slew of rare tracks and exclusive mixes, "Made in California" offers up some very unique looks into America's band. Songs such as "California Feelin'," "My Love Lives On," "Goin' to the Beach," and "Wouldn't it be Nice to Live Again" make their debuts here. Not to mention some rare and unique versions of songs such as "Back Home" and "Amusement Parks USA" put in fun appearances. Plenty of live oddities, sessions, and radio spots help to add in some flavor and diversity.

But while its predecessor (1993's 30th Anniversary Boxset) is still a firm fan favorite and much beloved by Beach Boys collectors, "MiC" was met with a tepid reception. A high price tag, lots of incongruous mixes, and a lack of material from several points in the group's history have undermined it among many. But is it all that bad? Certainly not!

Join me as we look at this very special boxset. Please comment below if you have one too!
