Wet Exit Without Using the Spray Deck Grab Loop

While not common, there are situations where we won't be able to use the grab loop on our spray skirt to release it.

This could be due to a mistake or not paying attention and the loop gets caught under the deck when it's put on (I have seen this rushing to get off a beach or in conditions and after a rescue). It could be something on the deck that gets in the way of it or we simply can't find or reach it.

What happens then?

If the loop is not accessible, the next option is pulling the skirt off at the hip. Rather than trying to pull at the skirt with your fingers - tough with a tight deck or with thick gloves, I recommend pressing your palm down on the skirt just inside the coaming and sliding it away from you. Your palm will 'grab' the material and bunch it allowing you to pull it free to get your fingers around the edge.

There are other methods - like using your knee to release the skirt - but they won't always work. With my skirt on 4 of my 5 primary kayaks, I cannot remove the skirt with my knee.

Once you have the skirt free, continue to release it from around your hip.
