This is our attempt to help people who are about to get flooded who do not have flood barriers. Flood Defense Group always receives calls for help when catastrophic flood waters are on the way and sometimes it is too late for us to help. Therefore, we are conducting experiments to see how people can protect themselves from flooding using locally available materials.

In this case we have a variety of different examples using Hay Bales that were saturated with water and covered with an impermeable membrane.

NOTE: If this was a real world event, we would have placed T-Posts or some sort of additional reinforcement behind the hay bales to prevent them from moving. However, in this case, we placed the 'barrier' on a concrete strip to simulate a driveway because your barrier is only as strong as the weakest link and the requirement to span a barrier across a driveway would not allow the addition of T-Posts.

NOTE: We had one configuration that passed the test but we would suggest this to be an absolute minimum and if additional hay bales or reinforcement measures were available, it would be strongly advised.

RESULTS MAY VARY! We do not claim that this configuration will always work as hay bales may differ in weight/shape, the friction value of your ground surfaces will vary, and the dynamics of the flood water may also differ. However, this gives you a starting point to protect yourself from floodwater with this DIY Flood Barrier configuration.

If you have an idea you would like to see tested, let us know!!
