They say that not even a fly can move without Lord Shiva’s permission. So, when Shiva beheaded his own son without recognizing him, it makes one ponder. Shiva, who has the power to recreate, reattach, and breathe life into his son’s head, instead destroys the head and replaces it with an elephant's head, bringing him back to life. This story often seems illogical to us.
However, understanding the unique boon given to a demon named Mushikasura makes this story clear. Mushikasura was no ordinary demon; he had to possess three main qualities: being Ayonija (not born from a womb), Dwijanuma (reborn), and Dvirupudu (possessing two forms). That’s why Parvati Devi, while taking her bath, created a boy from the turmeric paste on her body and gave him life, fulfilling the first condition of Ayonija.
The second condition, Dwijanuma, meant he had to be reborn, which necessitated his death. Hence, Shiva beheaded him. Afterward, he attached an elephant's head and revived Gauri's son. The third condition, Dvirupudu, explains why Shiva didn’t simply reattach the original head—Ganesha had Priyamvada's husband, threw her bracelet as a shield around Mushikasura.
Now it was a battle between Parvati’s bracelet and Gajanana’s tusk. The tusk relentlessly pursued Mushikasura, but the bracelet kept blocking it. This tug-of-war between the tusk and the bracelet shook the three realms.
At that moment, Adi Parashakti herself appeared and asked Parvati to withdraw her bracelet and Gajanana to recall his tusk. She then narrated the story of Mushikasura: he was once a Gandharva named Kauncha who had been cursed by Sage Vamadeva to become a demon. After a fierce penance, Mushikasura had stolen the nectar of immortality from the gods
With this, Gajanana had defeated Mushikasura and claimed him as his vehicle.
Sometime later, the gods requested a leader for the Ganas (Shiva’s attendants). Shiva decided to hold a contest: whoever bathed in all the holy rivers of the three worlds and returned to Kailasa first would become the leader of the Ganas. Brahma and Vishnu were appointed as judges.
Hearing this, the gods and Kartikeya, Shiva’s other son, mounted their vehicles and set out to bathe in the holy rivers across the three worlds. Gajanana, on the other hand, contemplated his predicament—his vehicle, the mouse, was slow and cumbersome, making it impossible to compete.
Undeterred, Gajanana calmly approached his parents, bowed to them, and performed three circumambulations around them. Wherever Kartikeya and the other gods went, they found Gajanana had already been there before them.
