German heavy trucks generate 48 million tons of CO₂ every year. So a scrapping bonus for trucks seems to have come at the right time. The German government decided on this incentive for scrapping old trucks last year, and the application deadline has just passed. A good reason for KLIMA° vor acht to take a critical look at the new regulations: what sounds like a good deal for the climate turns out to be less effective on closer inspection.

We made a mistake when calculating the reduced CO2 emissions due to the scrapping bonus (1:39). Here, CO2 emissions are reduced by 1.4% instead of 14% as shown in the video if all new trucks were emission-free.
Also, the figures "1.45 million tons of CO2 per year" (2:44) and "just under 3% of total truck emissions" (2:54) are reduced by a factor of 10. These lower figures further emphasize the negligible climate protection effect of the truck scrapping bonus.

The aim of the initiative KLIMA° vor acht is to encourage TV stations to broadcast scientifically based climate reporting daily and at prime time, up-to-date and easy to understand. In this way, as many people as possible can be informed about the ongoing climate crisis and be educated about possible solutions.

To achieve this goal, we have produced six exemplary episodes ourselves with the help of donations. From now on, these will be published here every Thursday at 19:55.

As we are a volunteer project, we do not have the same possibilities as a TV station, so of course we could not actually produce daily news. Therefore, as an example, we show a season that consists of two types of shows: on the one hand, background knowledge that can certainly be pre-produced and, on the other hand, reporting that puts current events into context. To illustrate this, we have fictitiously backdated this broadcast and show what the corresponding report could have looked like.

We demand #PrimeTimeFürsKlima on television. If you also support this idea, please feel free to sign our Open Letter to ARD: https://klimavoracht.de/brief/
