Kyoto Prefectural Rurikei Natural Park
A clear stream valley that changes its expression with the seasons
Ruri Valley is located in the southwestern part of Sonobe-cho, Nantan City, on a plateau at an altitude of 500 meters. The delicate landscape created by the clear stream and the natural forests on both banks entertains tourists and leisure visitors throughout the four seasons.
Rurikei is a four-kilometer-long valley formed by the Sonobe River eroding the slopes of the plateau. The upstream part is made up of granite, and the downstream part is made of quartz trachyte. In particular, the "Rurikei Junikan", which picks up the highlights, is given a distinctive name such as Gyokusoban or Soryuen, which strengthens the impression. Broad-leaved trees and Japanese red pines add seasonal colors to both banks, and the beautiful voice of sculpins can be heard from time to time in the clear river. The giant salamander, a special natural monument, also lives here.

Sightseeing and recreational facilities such as the artificial lake "Lake Tsuten" have been developed at the uppermost reaches of the river, and it is crowded with leisure visitors from the suburbs on holidays.
The main part of the valley was designated as a place of scenic beauty in 1932.
