He is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, blending various musical genres such as rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz, and country. His unique style and innovative approach to music earned him the nickname "The Genius."

Charles was born in Albany, Georgia, but his family moved to Greenville, Florida when he was an infant. At the age of five, he began losing his sight due to glaucoma. By the time he was seven years old, he was completely blind. Despite this challenge, Charles showed an early aptitude for music and began learning to play the piano at a young age.
