Gill nets are illegal in most parts of the world because they are too destructive even for countries that rely on the fishing industry as a primary source of income. Gill nets kill any living creature that gets entangled: the targeted fish species as well as any other kind of endangered or not endangered fish, as well as dolphins, turtles, and seals. They are difficult to spot because gill nets are designed to be invisible under water. The fishing line used for gill nets its very thin but strong, made to resist even immense amount of pressure and resistance from the struggling animal.
This seal rescue takes a lot longer than usual because the team have to remove every little piece of the net, including the part of the net that is caught in the seal's mouth. The rescuers are at great risk to get bitten by the injured animal and they are as careful as they can be. Luckily they succeed, and for this seal, the gill net will become a distant memory. For most other animals, it is the final one. 🦭
