Shop Tour - Peterbilt Maintenance | Changing Filters | Ridgley Contracting
Changing filters on a Peterbilt dump truck is an important part of routine maintenance to ensure the vehicle operates effectively. Here’s a general guide on how to change filters.
Gather all necessary tools and materials. You’ll need to replace oil, air and fuel filters. You’ll need a filter wrench, safety equipment including googles, gloves and a drain pan.
Identify the location of the various filters in your Peterbilt dump truck. Consult with your vehicle’s manual for precise locations.
Ensure the engine is cool and take safety precautions to prevent any spills or accidents.
Place the drain pan under the oil filter to catch any oil that might spill. Using a filter wrench, remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. Apply a small amount of fresh fuel to the rubber gasket on the new oil filter.
Screw on the new oil filter clockwise until it’s snug (usually about 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the base.
Changing the air filter by locating the air filter housing. Open the housing and remove the old filter. Insert the new air filter and close the housing.
Changing the fuel filter by locating the fuel filter housing. Use the filter wrench to remove the old fuel filter. Fill the new fuel filter with clean diesel fuel and screw on the new fuel filter securely.
Properly dispose of the old filters any any used oils or fuel as per local regulations.
Check for leaks after changing the filters, start the engine and check for any oil or fuel leaks. Make sure the oil pressure and fuel system are functioning correctly.
Keep a record of when you changed them for future reference and reorder filters for next time. I also mark the filters themselves with the date and mileage of the change.
Always refer to your Peterbilt dump truck’s manual for specific instructions and recommended filter change intervals.
Remember, if you’re not comfortable or experienced with this process, it’s advisable to have a professional mechanic or technician perform the filter changes to ensure they are done correctly and safely.
