First you need to make contact, get their attention and be noticed. Your priority can’t be to start a relationship, or even to take her out on a date. It should simply be to get noticed. Here are a few tips on how to break the ice with a girl at college without looking like a lecherous catcaller who scares girls away even before a full conversation.

For starters, I strongly recommend you don’t even TRY to flirt during the first week. The first week of the college year is one of the most stressful, so it’s definitely not the best for trying to find a new companion. Everyone is running around, figuring out their schedules and focused on figuring out their lives for the next few months.

Trying to hit on a girl in the first week makes you seem desperate and pushy, like you need to jump into a relationship before you even have a chance to make new friends or figure out your study schedule.

Trying to get down and dirty before the end of the first week makes it easier for your fellow students, especially the women you’re trying to start a potential relationship with, to categorize you and leave you stuck in a pigeon hole you’ll be hard-pressed to dig yourself out of. However, just because you’re not flirting and actively seeking a relationship doesn’t mean you can’t try and just have conversations with girls. Talk to as many girls as you can, the more comfortable you are around women and the topics they like to discuss, the easier it will be to know how to initiate a serious conversation with a girl you’re interested in having something more with.
