Dzilam is a very quiet place of natural beauties and beautiful beaches, with attractions such as the waterholes, the Elepetén cenote, the lagoon, and "Las Bocas" where the river and the sea come together. Near this port, to the east, is the Yalkubul lighthouse, one of the most prominent parts of the coastline. It is also recommended to visit the "Laguna Feliz" 3 km away. from the port and the X-Buyhá waterhole near the Elepetén cenote.

It is a historic port, since the Spanish led by Francisco de Montejo (father) landed there to begin the conquest of the Peninsula. It was the main port of Yucatán at the time when salted meats, tallow, leather and dyewood were exported through that place. There has always been abundant fishing in the mouths that are nearby. In that place is the tomb of the famous 19th century pirate, Jean Laffite.

Dzilam de Bravo has become an important fishing port with a dock and other facilities.

It is located 107 km. from the city of Mérida, and 79 km. east of Progreso. There are two ways to get there; along the coast arriving at Puerto Progreso, and then moving to Telchac Puerto, passing through other ports such as San Crisanto, Chabihau and Santa Clara. The other is along the road that leads to the municipality of Tizimín, passing through the bypasses of Motul and Suma de Hidalgo and then taking the detour to Cansahcab and continuing towards Dzidzantun, Dzilam González and finally the port of Dzilam de Bravo.
