Baisha Ancient Town (白沙古镇) is one of the oldest towns in Lijiang (丽江), Yunnan (云南), China. Its name, "Baisha," translates to "white sand," reflecting the natural white sand found in the area. Historically, Baisha Village was a significant Naxi (纳西族) settlement and the birthplace of the local Mu Family Governors, serving as the political, economic, and cultural center of Lijiang before the Ming Dynasty. Located approximately 12 kilometers north of Lijiang City, Baisha was the original settlement of the Naxi people in the Lijiang basin and played a crucial role as the capital of the Naxi Kingdom before 1270. The town is nestled near the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山), surrounded by natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Baisha is renowned for its well-preserved ancient architecture, including the Baisha housing cluster established during the Song and Yuan dynasties, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town of Lijiang. This ancient town not only offers a glimpse into the Naxi culture and history but also stands as a testament to the region's historical significance and cultural diversity.
