Skomer Island, located off the coast of Wales, is a true paradise for puffins and other sea birds. Every year, thousands of puffins migrate to Skomer to breed and nurture their offspring. Each pair lays one egg and the parents take turns incubating. After six weeks a puffling is born! The puffling stays in the underground burrow waiting for food from the parents. Once the puffling is ready it will make its way out to the water and join the parents for a few weeks before migrating in mid July.

To embark on an unforgettable journey to Skomer, secure a spot on the Pembrokeshire Islands Boat Trips operated by Dale Sailing. Tickets do sell out quickly. I suggest not waiting to purchase tickets.

Park at Martins Haven National Trust car park. Parking is free to National Trust members. Check in at the Lockley Lodge Visitor Centre where you can purchase food, drinks, and, souvenirs of puffins.

Boats departing to Skomer Island are 15 minutes. The tour lasts five hours which is plenty of time to walk around the entire island, eat lunch, and make it back to the boat. Bring a hat and sun cream as there is little shade on Skomer.

As a conservation effort, Skomer Island does not provide rubbish bins. It's important to carry off any waste you bring onto the island.

In addition to the delightful puffins, visitors can witness approximately 165,000 pairs of Manx Shearwater along with Kittiwakes, and Razorbill soaring through the skies and diving into the surrounding waters. On land, watch for the adorable rabbits and the unique Skomer vole.
