VIKING ASSAULT ON PARIS
On March 28, 845, Viking troops attacked Paris. Some 5,000 men, led by the mythical Ragnar, besieged the city aboard 120 ships from the Seine River. The Norsemen had in recent years taken advantage of the weakness of the Franks since the death of Charlemagne, but this time their raid was much more ambitious.

The Vikings had already launched raids against the territory of the Franks during the eighth century, but after the death of Charlemagne they took advantage of the fragmentation of this kingdom and intensified their attacks. His big goal was Paris. The person in charge of defending the future capital of France was Charles the Bald, who had to face one of the most feared warriors in Scandinavia, Ragnar Lodbrok. Frankish attempts to avoid the Viking hordes were unsuccessful. The monarch had to flee and pay a tax to prevent the looting of the city. Attracted by the ease of obtaining good loot without having to fight, the Norse established several camps along the Seine to attack the Franks when it suited them in search of compensation. In 885, for example, they besieged Paris again, and the battle ended in the same way as years before: paying a succulent ransom to the Vikings.
