THE VIKINGS IN NORTH AMERICA

The Icelandic Sagas are books about families that describe events that happened to these families in Iceland in the 10th and 11th centuries.
Groenlendinga Saga, tells of the colonization of Greenland started by Erik the Red.
In the 11th century, a group of Vikings led by Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red, reached the coasts of Newfoundland, in what is now Canada. They established a settlement that could have lasted about 50 or 60 years, it is known with certainty from studies carried out on the wood found in said settlement that they were there in the year 1021, the expedition left Greenland from the colonies founded by their father Erik the Red in the year 982.
Leif called this land Vinland, land of vineyards, in the sagas conflicts with the local population are told, probably Algoquins, native Indians of that part of North America, the settlements did not last very long, just as those of Greenland were maintained for almost 500 years. Among the reasons studied for why this settlement was not consolidated are internal disputes and fights and the small female population that participated in the expedition.
In the 1960s, with the discovery of a Viking settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows, in Newfoundland, the historical basis described in the Icelandic Sagas, specifically in the Saga of the Greenlanders, was confirmed.
