📌"Our Lady of Perpetual Help" Icon📌

At the end of the 15th century, in a cathedral on Crete, an island in the Mediterranean south of Greece, there was an icon known to cause numerous miracles.

However, a merchant who wanted it stole the icon from the cathedral and took it to Rome, Italy.

After some time, the merchant fell seriously ill and died. He handed the icon over to his friend and left this will.

“Be sure to bring this precious icon to the cathedral!”

The merchant's friend tried to grant the will, but his wife persuaded him to keep the icon in her home.

Then one day, the Virgin Mary appeared to the merchant's friend and warned him that his life would be in danger if he did not place the icon in the cathedral.

He was shocked and reported this to his wife, but his wife urged him not to believe in illusions and kept the icon at home.

In the end, the merchant's friend fell ill and died as the Virgin Mary warned.

And, after some time, the Virgin Mary appeared to her six-year-old daughter and said.

“I am the Virgin of Perpetual Help. I want to stay at St. Matthew’s Cathedral.”

Only then did his wife change her mind and reported all this to the Augustinian Church, which was in charge of St. Matthew's Cathedral at the time, and on March 27, 1499, the icon was placed in St. Matthew's Cathedral.

However, in 1798, St. Matthew's Cathedral was destroyed by Napoleon, who conquered Rome.

Fortunately, the icon was moved to a small chapel by Augustinian monks, but it was lost and forgotten by people.

About 70 years later, in 1855, the Redemptorist Monastery built St. Alphonsus Cathedral.

However, the location where this cathedral was built was the same as the cathedral of St. Matthew destroyed by Napoleon, and after learning of this fact, members of the Redemptorist Society found the lost icon after searching.

In January 1866, the icon was placed back where the Virgin Mary had wanted it, and Pope Pius IX declared June 27 every year as the 'Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help', to this day, it brings strength, comfort, and hope to countless people.

In this way, help us believe that the image of God, who is love, is renewed in us day by day, and that we gain the power of salvation from the cross of Christ, and that through the power of the Holy Spirit, who accomplishes amazing things through believers, may our lives be a praise and glory to you, the Father.
