“He is an angel!”

This commonly used phrase means “a person’s nature is good.”

However, the name angel is a word that represents ‘duty’ rather than nature.

“Angel” (天使, angel)
Spiritual beings who run God’s errands (Catholic Dictionary)

In other words, angel is a word that emphasizes the job of ‘God’s errand boy.’

There are numerous angels in the Bible, but only three angels are given specific names.

They are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, who are called the ‘three great angels.’

“Michael”
A name meaning ‘who is like God?’

Michael appears in the Book of Revelation as the leader of the heavenly army fighting against the giant dragon symbolizing Satan.

His icon depicts a very strong young man, fully armed with armor and a sword.

Michael plays the role of protecting humans from evil and is the patron saint of those who are about to die.

“Gabriel”
A name that means ‘God is my strong one’

In his Gospel of Luke, Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary and announces the birth of the Savior.

In his paintings, ‘lilies’, symbolizing Mary’s purity and virginity, appear.

Gabriel plays the role of a messenger who informs humans of God's will, and is the patron saint of mass media and telecommunications workers such as TV, radio, telephone, and mail.

“Raphael”
A name that means ‘God heals’

In the book of Tobit, Raphael travels with young Tobiah as a guide, and heals Tobiah's father Tobit's lost eyesight with the gall of a fish.

In his paintings, a staff symbolizing travel and pilgrimage appears, along with a bottle containing intestines or a fish symbolizing healing.

Raphael accompanies humans and plays a role in healing diseases, and is the patron saint of travelers, youth, and the blind.

“Michael, Gabriel, Raphael”

The Catholic Church especially honors them as archangels and prohibits the use of any other name.

The names of the three archangels all end with ‘El’, which means ‘God’ in Hebrew.

In other words, the names of angels contain ‘God’.

Angels cannot exist without God and have a relationship with God that does not allow them to separate from each other even for a moment.

Angels contain God, do God's work, and are God's chosen collaborators for human salvation.

God conveys his love to humans through angels.

An angel who hugs you tightly and cries with you

Just as God spreads his word and protects us through angels, we too, as other angels of God, must spread God's word and love to our families and neighbors.

Even today, God calls us to be angels who spread his love.

“For my angel is with you, and he is the custodian of your lives.” (Baruch 6,6)

“That you are acceptable to me” (1 Samuel 29,9)
