Cripple Creek, a historic Colorado mining town on the west side of Pikes Peak, has a herd of remarkable donkeys.

Donkeys were the unsung heroes of the mines, tirelessly pulling heavy ore carts through the underground tunnels. When machinery replaced them in the early 1900s, the mine operators released the animals to roam Cripple Creek, and they are still there!

The Two Mile High Club was established in 1931 to care for the donkeys, and for nearly a century, volunteers have been feeding, sheltering, and providing medical care to the animals.

Each year on Memorial Day, the donkeys are released from their winter pasture into the town of Cripple Creek for the summer. The donkeys are free to wander the town, occasionally creating mischief and always delighting visitors.

Donkey enthusiasts can feed the animals β€œdonkey biscuits" that are available at many of the local businesses. The donkeys roam the town until mid-October when they return to their winter pasture.
