Udu Fantasy is based on the Nigerian “clay pot drum” called the udu. This piece uses ideas from West African drumming to make music with the soft-spoken instrument through conversation-like phrasing. The instrument is originally used for worship with women’s ceremonies and rites from the Igbo people. Basically speaking, it was created from a water or grain pot with an extra hole in it, making music with household items. In this non-traditional piece, the trio of players get to communicate and improvise like a traditional drumming ensemble in West Africa, but with the special tones and techniques of the udu. Traditionally played as accompaniment to a woman singing, being held in the arms or on the lap by tapped with the fingers and the palm of the hand.
