You might not have ever heard of him, but Francis 2 Gun Crowley brought a 3-month reign of terror onto the streets of New York in 1931, with the climax being a 2-hour shootout vs 300 police officers armed with rifles, machine guns and tear gas. The stand-off was witnessed by over 15,000 bystanders who gathered to watch the drama unfold which has gone down in history as the battle of 91st street.
Standing at 5 foot 6 and barely 18 years of age, it’s unbelievable to think brought the whole of New York to a standstill as the New York Police Department searched every nook and cranny of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx for the man the press dubbed ‘Two Gun Crowley’. A true mad-man Crowley provided inspiration for mad-man playing actor James Cagney’s character Rocky Sullivan in 1938 gangster classic ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’
