Castle Campbell is an amazing structure on top of a small hill in the Ochil range. It towers over the charming town of Dollar and Dollar Glen, a beautiful and magical lush green forest full of deep gorges and impressive waterfalls. The hill was fortified since the 12th century and a castle was erected in the 15th century as Castle Gloom. I have no idea where the name came from. Even this castle's ruins are quite cheerful, full of beautiful flowers and amazing architecture. The castle was acquired at the end of the 15th century by Colin Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll and renamed to Castle Campbell. It wasn't a clan seat, but since Colin Campbell had many duties in the royal court in Stirling, it was a very convenient place to own. The castle was a witness to the struggle for power between the most powerful clans in Scotland in many areas, politics, religion and sometimes all-out war. In the 16th century, it hosted famous Lutheran minister John Knox, who was preaching there. In the 17th century, it was garrisoned by Cromwell troops, but removed from there by royalist forces after just two days of siege. In the 18th century, during the Jacobite rising, the castle was abandoned and later sold to the neighbouring estate, Harviestoun and then to Sir Andrew Orr, Lord Provost of Glasgow. In 1948 it was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland which performed the renovation. Now it is operated by the Historic Scotland Trust and is available for visitors for a relatively low price.
