Peljidiin Genden was born in 1895 in present-day Khujirt district in Mongolia. As a child, he grew up tending horses and cattle like everyone else. In 1922, Genden joined the Mongolian Revolutionary Youth League, and a year later he was appointed acting head of his local cell.
From 1924, Mongolia was a one-party state ruled by the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party and maintained close political and economic ties with the Soviet Union. This made Mongolia the first Asian and the second country in the world - after Russia - to adopt communism. The Mongolian People's Republic was modelled on the Soviet Union and became its satellite state until the year 1990.
