Rula Frances, born in Volos, Greece, describes her early family life during World War II, detailing the Italian and subsequent German occupations of Volos and the increasing restrictions on Jews. An Italian officer's warning of a deportation list prompted her brother-in-law to flee, leading the family to relocate first to Thessaloniki and then to Athens. In Athens, with Greek identities provided by the Chief of Police in Volos, the family hid in various houses. Rula recounts living with the Chief of Police, Tagaris, for a year before being betrayed by his maid and subsequently moving in with her mother. While Rula worked at the Red Cross, her immediate family continued to hide, all surviving the war, although her extended family perished. Rula married in 1953. Her interview, conducted by Peter Ryan on June 18, 1996, is part of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection, courtesy of the Jeff and Toby Herr Foundation.
