ডাঃ বিধানচন্দ্র রায় একাধারে ধন্বন্তরি চিকিৎসক ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গের রূপকার তথা স্বাধীনতা পরবর্তী ভারতে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের দ্বিতীয় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী। ডাক্তার বিধানচন্দ্র আজও বাঙালির কাছে মিথ হয়ে আছেন। মহাত্মা গান্ধী থেকে জহরলাল নেহেরু, রবীন্দ্রনাথ থেকে ইন্দিরা গান্ধী -বিধানচন্দ্র রায়ের স্বনামধন্য বিখ্যাত রুগীদের তালিকা অনেক লম্বা। ১লা জুলাই তাঁর জন্মদিনটি আজও আমরা পালন করি চিকিৎসক দিবস হিসেবে। আবার ১৯৪৮ থেকে ১৯৬২ খ্রিস্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত তাঁর মুখ্যমন্ত্রীত্বের সময়ে তিনি নিরলস কাজ করে গেছেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের জন্য। আসানসোল-দুর্গাপুর শিল্পাঞ্চল থেকে, হলদিয়া বন্দর; ব্যান্ডেল তাপবিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র থেকে হরিণঘাটা দুগ্ধপ্রকল্প; যাদবপুর টিবি হাসপাতাল থেকে চিত্তরঞ্জন সেবাসদন; রবীন্দ্রভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, বর্ধমান বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে থেকে পুরুলিয়া, রহড়া, নরেন্দ্রপুর রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন ইত্যাদি শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান স্থাপন, সল্টলেক, লেকটাউন, কল্যাণী উপনগরী নির্মাণ বা আরও কর্মসংস্থানের জন্য কলকাতা রাষ্ট্রীয় পরিবহন নির্মাণ -বিধানচন্দ্র রায়ের বহুবিধ কর্মযজ্ঞই তাঁকে করে তুলেছে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের নবরূপকার। স্বাধীনতা পরবর্তী উত্তাল সময়ে খাদ্য আন্দোলন, ট্রামভাড়া বৃদ্ধির আন্দোলন, শিক্ষক আন্দোলন, উদবাস্তু সমস্যা ইত্যাদি নিয়ে তাঁকে যেমন সমালোচিত হতে হয়েছে; তেমনই সত্যজিৎ রায়ের পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে ‘পথের পাঁচালী’ সিনেমার প্রযোজনা, উদয়শঙ্করকে আর্থিক সাহায্য, রবীন্দ্র জন্ম শতবর্ষে রবীন্দ্ররচনাবলীর প্রকাশের উদ্যোগ -তাঁকে প্রশংসিতও করেছে। সব মিলিয়েই মিথ বাস্তবতায় ডাঃ বিধানচন্দ্র রায়ের জন্ম ও মৃত্যু বার্ষিকীতে এই পর্ব ডাঃ বিধানচন্দ্র রায়ের এক অপূর্ণ স্মরণিকা।

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician, architect of West Bengal's development post-independence, and its second Chief Minister. Dr. Bidhan Chandra remains a legendary figure among Bengalis, revered alongside Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, and Indira Gandhi. His birth anniversary on 1st July is celebrated as Doctors' Day. From 1948 to 1962, his tenure as Chief Minister saw relentless work for West Bengal. From Asansol-Durgapur industrial belt to Haldia Port; from Bandel Thermal Power Station to Haringhata Dairy Project; from Jadavpur TB Hospital to Chittaranjan Sevashram; founding institutions like Rabindra Bharati University, Burdwan University, Purulia, Rahara, Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission, to infrastructure projects like Salt Lake, Lake Town, and Kalyani Township – Bidhan Chandra Roy's multifaceted contributions reshaped West Bengal. His leadership during the post-independence era, including the food movement, tram fare increase protest, teachers' movement, and refugee issues, faced praise and criticism. Alongside Satyajit Ray's call for 'Pather Panchali' film funds, financial aid to Uday Shankar, and initiative for publishing Rabindranath's collected works on his centenary, Bidhan Chandra Roy earned acclaim. Together, these reflect the myth and reality of his life, commemorated annually on his birth and death anniversary – a testament to Bidhan Chandra Roy's enduring legacy.
