Turnovers haunted Pine Bluff High School as the Zebras dropped their second game of the season.
Dallas Kimball defeated Pine Bluff 35-6 on Saturday at Simmons Bank Field on the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff campus.
Two Zebra quarterbacks combined to throw four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Pine Bluff also fumbled twice, and Kimball blocked a punt and stopped the Zebras on a fourth down.
Pine Bluff coach Micheal Williams said the offense needs to work fundamentals.
"Back to the basics," Williams said. "Go to the most basic stuff, and we have to be able to execute the most basic stuff."
After getting shut out in the season opener last week, Pine Bluff (0-2) scored a touchdown on its first drive Saturday. Quarterback Antwone Miller hit Tristain Helloms for a 34-yard gain on the drive, and D'Juan Hayes finished it with a 4-yard run, tying the game at 6 after the Knights had scored on their opening possession.
Kimball (1-1) retook the lead on its next drive and didn't allow any further Pine Bluff points. The Knights extended their lead in the second quarter, scoring three plays after Kevin Jacobs blocked a Pine Bluff punt. Kimball led 19-6 at halftime.
The Zebra defense shut out the Knights in the second half, but Kimball's defense helped its offense. The Knights fumbled at the Pine Bluff 1-yard line, but the Zebras were unable to gain a first down. After having trouble punting throughout the game, Pine Bluff elected to take an intentional safety rather than give Kimball potentially excellent field position.
Kimball scored two defensive touchdowns on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter, both interception returns.
For all the difficulties the offense had, the Pine Bluff defense did everything it could. The Zebras intercepted three Kimball passes in the first half and stopped the Knights twice on fourth downs in the second half.
Williams said this team will need to rely on its defense this season.
"It was another outstanding game, besides a couple of blown coverages in the beginning," Williams said. "But defense is what we're going to hang our hat on. Our guys got us the ball back all game long, and we gotta be able to capitalize on that."
Hayes led the Pine Bluff offense with 42 rushing yards and 18 receiving yards. Kimball quarterback Armirie Williams-Hall completed 16 of 25 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a score.
This game and last week's were part of the Guard the Line series. Although the Zebras lost both games, Williams said these two weeks have been a great experience.

"They got a chance to play some out-of-state competition, see what the competition like," Williams said. "I hope they get an opportunity to see that the competition out of state is not superior to them. They know that they can compete. Now, it's just a matter of, the teams that we played, see how they didn't mess up and see how we can be able to straighten things out."
