The largest part of a Renaissance Venetian gown is the skirt. How
did Italians achieve the voluminous skirts we see in portraits? And
where did they get their gorgeous fabrics?

In this video I delve into the process of constructing a Renaissance skirt for my Venetian gown project using some extant examples, some history of Venetian textiles, and some guess work.

Venice, due to it's heavy involvement in trade, had access to some of the most coveted fabrics in Europe from the Medieval period well past the 16th century. It also learned to make its own beautiful fabrics from the cultures it traded with. Fabrics at this time had loom widths that were much narrower than today, and we see this depicted in the piecing methods used in the Eleanora Di Toledo burial gown (Florentine) as well as other extant garments and portraits from this era. Piecing is period.
