One of my very favorite tunes when it comes to Hawaiian swing and jazz is this little gem, “Ne’e Ne’e Mai A Pili,” (“Cuddle Up Closer”), attributed to Charles E. King. Taken at a private concert held March 11, 2023 at the home of Wolf Dieter and Ursula Klause - mahalo to Ursula (Uschi) for the videography and the onoliscious food after the concert.
Widdy Loo - Guitar/Vocals
Duane Yamada - Bass/Vocals
Tani Waipa - Ukulele/Lead Vocal
In my head I’m hearing big band era horns, a tight sax trio and snappy trap drum set with a “ting”-y cymbal sound. I first heard this song from left-handed guitarist and previous band member Randy Kaaihue whose dad had arranged it for a female vocal group back in the 60’s. The song has endless possibilities and will likely be one that we record in the future.
A “Live” version of the concert was aired simultaneously and may be available for future viewing @TaniWaipa on this channel.
