My 450th video on this channel comes from my 1st visit to Ely on the Fen Line which is also the junction for Ipswich to Peterborough, Breckland Line to Norwich and Ipswich to Ely Line

Featuring services from Greater Anglia, Great Northern, East Midlands Railway, CrossCountry Trains and Freight.

Ely was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway in 1845 and built on the sight of a former marshy swamp land.

The station has 3 platforms which are all bi-directional with Platforms 1 and 2 mostly through services continuing to either Peterborough, Norwich or Kings Lynn or Ipswich and Cambridge respectively.

Platform 3 used by half hourly terminating Great Northern services from London Kings Cross which run non stop to Cambridge which are nicknamed as 'The Cambridge Cruiser" whilst most hourly services continue onto Kings Lynn

Greater Anglia who manage the station are served by Norwich - Stansted Airport and Peterborough - Ipswich services which are now provided by Class 755 Flirts introduced in November 2019 however a few trains a day do either terminate or continue to Kings Lynn to and from London Liverpool Street via Bishops Stortford which nowadays are provided by Class 720s although throughout the day services terminate and start at Cambridge North.

CrossCounty services are provided by Class 170 Turbostars which mostly run from Birmingham New Street via Nuneaton, Leicester and Peterborough to Stansted Airport

East Midlands Railway services reverse here operating services via the Breckland Line to Norwich mostly originating from Liverpool Lime Street via Nottingham and Grantham which mostly operated by Class 158 Sprinters although sometimes Class 156s can operate on the route.

At present all signals in the Ely area are controlled by Cambridge Signal Box which at the time of filming is due to undergo major re-signalling works in the next few years with work being carried out by Alstom.

And almost forgot to mention that activity here isn't just passenger services with freight services as well

Whether the weather is Dry or Wet combined with the Facilities available at the station too it would be very surprising if Ely station doesn't keep you busy.
