In this video I use scrap pieces of 2x4s to make a hinged step with a storage compartment underneath.
One of the 2x4s used wound up having substantial rot that I didn't notice at first. Sadly, this was the 2x4 on the very front of the step. So I wound up having to reinforce the wood fibers with wood hardener. As a result, the stain doesn't look nearly as good as I'd hoped. Also, because I had to sand away some rot, I would up with a more organically shaped front to the step, which I kind of like.
