Working in the shop of my barn on a cold winters day to make some wide ship lap wall covering for the living quarters side. I wanted to keep with the rustic look of the design and so I used a #3 1x12 pine shelving board. It has knots and such in it, and it is a cheaper grade of lumber. But that is what we wanted. I used a router and an adjustable bearing rabbeting bit to create the ship lap joint. It's not difficult, just took some time to complete. Saved myself quite a bit of money doing it this way. I have really only seen a 1x8 as the widest that you could buy pre-made. I wanted a much wider profile, so I decided on the 1x12.
