On the peaceful island of Kauai, residents and tourists get a chance to take shelter dogs on field trips to beaches, parks, and mountains. In a seamless process led by knowledgeable staff, we were matched with 6-year-old Harley, a beautiful, affectionate dog who loves all people and dogs. We were given a backpack filled with a bottle of water, a bowl, treats, a towel, and toys. Harley has a great nose, so we treated her to a variety of sights and scents at the historic, gorgeous Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail. She saw powerful waves, cliffs, sea birds, dogs, and horses; she smelled the Pacific Ocean and a variety of rocks and blooming plants; and she felt the ocean spray and the strong sun and wind on her face. We were told that staff and volunteers love taking her for walks because she so deeply loves the experience of being with them and sticks right by them. When she took a break, she rested her head on our feet, and in the car, she napped snuggled up beside us.

She's been at the shelter for years and would love a new home, so we wonder: Do you know someone who is looking for the perfect dog?
