In this interview, we have the pleasure of speaking with Andrea Contato, expert collector and author, who will guide us through a journey into the past of the Italian video game industry.

Italy, in the past, had its own video game and console production industry, and not many know that in Bergamo there was a company called Cabel Electronic, which left an indelible mark in the history of video games. Between 1977 and 1983, Cabel produced seven different consoles, some of which were brought by Andrea Contato to Varese Retrocomputing 2023: Lem 2000, Universal Game Computer, Telegioca and Sirius.
But the surprises don't end there. Andrea also introduces us to the Mesaton, a fascinating Italian prototype produced in Milan by Mesa 2. This project is a true example of... Italian ingenuity, with the artisanal production of consoles also involving clandestine operations!
Featuring the same Philips technology, the Mesaton and Universal Game Computer look very different on the outside, but they share a common circuit.

Andrea Contato also shows us some of his books dedicated to the history of video games, including a book on Cabel, which covers the company's history from its inception until its closure in 2001. Furthermore, he presents us with the reprint of the 1982 Christmas catalog of the Cabel, a real dive into the nostalgia of the 80s.
There is also the biography of Richard Garriott, the creator of the famous "Ultima" game series. This book is available in English and Italian and represents a real treat for role-playing game enthusiasts.
