Episode 6: Trains, Tranquility, and Seafood Feasts at Bei Xep Beach
Welcome to Episode 6 of Dragon Tour Twenty-4! This time, we embark on a day train journey from Danang, sitting in standard "soft seats." As we reach Danang Station, the staff is hilariously apologetic about a mere 9-minute delay—something that tickled us, given our experience with Laos scheduling!
However, the 6.5-hour train ride in cattle class, sometimes without air conditioning, was far from amusing. Definitely not the best logistical experience on this tour so far! 😅 But all our train-xiety melted away upon arrival at the stunning 'Casa Marina' resort on Bei Xep Beach.
We were absolutely blown away by the beauty of this quiet fishing cove. The bay invited us for a refreshing swim, and we spent hours collecting shellfish and crabs from the rocks. Just offshore, a handful of fishing boats rocked gently on the waves, waiting to offload their catch to the villagers in their coracle boats.
As evening fell, the beach transformed into a culinary haven. The fisherman's families set up several 'pop-up' restaurants, grilling the freshest catch of the day over charcoal. We savoured oysters, snails, clams, lobster, sea urchins, grouper fish, and razor clams. Each bite was a testament to the ocean's bounty, expertly prepared and bursting with flavour. The smoky aroma from the grill and the sight of the fisherman's families dexterously crafting this oceanic feast created an unforgettable experience that truly surpassed our expectations.
The next day, we wandered off the beach into the village, where we tried some freshly made spring rolls and marveled at the shared water well—a remarkable feat of engineering providing potable water to all the residents.
Our visit to Bei Xep Beach was over far too soon, and we had to head to Nha Trang. But this paradise has left an indelible mark on us, and we will certainly return one day.
