Tarikh Episode 668

In this episode Nikhil Talks about Veliyan Kallu, "The Island of Sacrifice." It is situated 40 kilometers from Kozhikode in Kerala, India, is a small but historically significant island with a unique tale woven into its rugged surface. Translated as "White Rock" in English, this landmark holds a rich history deeply rooted in local legends.
According to one narrative, Veliyan Kallu's origin is linked to the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. It is believed that during the battle between Lakshmana and Meghnad, Lakshmana fell unconscious, requiring the life-reviving Sanjeevani herb. Hanuman, unable to identify the herb, carried an entire piece of Dronagiri Parvat back to revive Lakshmana, and a fragment of the mountain fell into the Arabian Sea, becoming Veliyan Kallu.
In later centuries, the rock gained prominence during the maritime conflicts between the Portuguese and local warriors, notably Kunjali Marakkar. Serving as a strategic base for naval attacks against Portuguese forces, Veliyan Kallu earned the name "The Island of Sacrifice."
During the 16th century, Kunjali Marakkar played a crucial role in resisting Portuguese expansion. The rock became a symbol of bravery and sacrifice against the invaders. Even in the British era, there were plans to establish a lighthouse on Veliyan Kallu, reflecting its strategic significance.
The legends surrounding the rock persisted, with locals considering it a mysterious and haunted place, believed to be the resting ground of sacrificed souls. Today, Veliyan Kallu stands as a testament to Kerala's rich history, attracting visitors not only for its scenic beauty but also to connect with the echoes of valor and resistance engraved in its ancient stones.
